The cog-free brushless linear motor is designed for unlimited stroke travel servo applications that require smooth operation without cogging. These motors are supplied in kit form to be integrated into a customer machine.

The linear brushless AC Cog-free servo motor consists of a stationary magnet track and a moving coil assembly. The U-shaped, multi-pole magnet track is comprised of alternating polarity rare-earth magnets bonded to a hard-chrome plated, steel plate. Modular track assemblies stack end to end to provide the length of stoke required. The coil assembly must be centered within the U-shaped magnet track and guided by customer supplied bearing. Individual coil assemblies can be mounted in series (as a single unit) to increase force. Multiple coil assemblies having independent operation and overlapping trajectories can also be mounted on a single magnet track.

The moving primary is a three-phase ironless core coil. The winding is encapsulated in thermally conductive epoxy. The ironless core eliminates the magnetic-attractive force between the coil assembly and the magnet track. Custom designs without Hall sensors are available. An aluminum mounting bracket is integrated with the coil assembly. For improved heat dissipation and increased force, a water cooling option is available on some models.

Advantages of Linear Motors

• High repeatability – resolution to 0.000004 inch (0.1 microns) – this makes sure all parts produced are accurate and identical

• Highly accurate – to 0.0001 inch/ft (2.5 micron/300 mm) – provides precise machine operation for precision parts

• No backlash – direct drive has no backlash such as with lead screws, gears, etc. this improves the accuracy of the part or operation

• Faster acceleration – from 1 to over 10 G’s – this leads to shortened cycle times and improved productivity. • Higher velocities – speeds to over 300 inches/second (8 meters/sec) – to position the payload faster

• Long term reliability – only two parts with only one moving part – this leads to simplicity and improves the applications reliability

• No wear or maintenance – no contacting parts, thus reducing component friction and wear

• Ease of installation – linear motors are designed to allow for alignment tolerances. Misalignment produces no degradation of performance Linear motors consist of two parts – a stationary track or “platen” and a moving “forcer”. They can be provided as a stand-alone linear motor assembly or as a complete stage – built with a housing or enclosure with linear bearings, limit switches, cable track/carrier, protective bellows and linear encoder in a wide variety of lengths.
